The very next day my father drove me to pick it up. That had to be one of the longest days in my lifetime. As I recall, sleep did not happen the night before. When we got there it was waiting in the driveway. I forgot to mention to that I never drove a manual transmission car before. No problem. I was going to learn that day. Hey, no one was going to drive her but me. What a crazy time I had bringing my Corvette home that day. All I can say is that I quickly learned to let the clutch out real slow.
Owning this 1966 Corvette brought me some of my happiest memories. Going to Greater Pittsburgh drive in was one of my best times. Whenever she pulled in the whole drive in crowd took notice of her. Might have something to do with the sound of her powerful small block engine resonating through the headers and side pipe exhausts. The very next year I had her motor rebuilt by one of the area's well-known racing engine builders. Hold on now! Did this Corvette come to life after the fresh rebuild? The day I picked her up after her surgery was fantastic. Man did she pull hard and go like she was reborn. For the next 3 years we had great cruises in the spring, summer, and fall. I never considered driving my Corvette in the lousy winter weather. She would be put into storage during the cold winters waiting to return to our roads once again.
In the summer of 1981 I sold her to my close friend Jim. He still has her after all these years and occasionally I get to drive her again. A smile always returns to my face as I reminisce about those great past times. Jim and I made an agreement that if he ever decides to sell her I get first crack. His brother recently told me he is thinking of selling her real soon. I may tap into my 401K to get her back. Who cares about being 80 and having money whenever a good old friend like my 66 Corvette may be available. If this happens, you may find me working at McDonalds in my later years. Just look over to the side when ordering your fries as she sits there smiling in the parking lot. If you wondered about how much I sold her for, it was $6,200. I have a feeling she'll cost somewhat more this time around.
